What fourth graders learn in reading and language arts

Fourth graders read longer and more challenging texts and are expected to think about them. They find a theme in stories, work out the main idea of nonfiction, and summarize both in their own words. They use evidence from the text to back up what they say.

Writing gets more organized, with opinion pieces that give reasons supported by facts and details, informational writing, and stories with description and dialogue. Language lessons focus on grammar and on figuring out the meaning of words and figurative language.

Skills kids practice

  • Find the theme of a story and summarize it (RL.4.2)
  • Find the main idea of a text and summarize it (RI.4.2)
  • Read aloud with accuracy and expression (RF.4.4)
  • Write opinion pieces with reasons supported by facts and details (W.4.1)
  • Use context clues to learn word meanings (L.4.4a)
  • Explain similes, metaphors and idioms (L.4.5a, L.4.5b)

Tips for teachers and parents

  • Ask for a one- or two-sentence summary after each chapter or article. It builds the habit of finding what matters.
  • Talk about the lesson of a story in your own words and ask where the story shows it.
  • Keep a notebook of interesting words and figurative phrases you come across.
