Coloring and art for kindergartners

Coloring is one of the first ways young children make something that is truly theirs. It gives them a reason to hold a crayon, make choices about color, and stay with one picture until it is done. For many kindergartners it is also a calm, screen-free break in the day.

Art in kindergarten is about exploring, not getting it right. The National Core Arts Standards ask kids to explore and play with art materials and to build skills by trying them out, and coloring pages are an easy first step.

Skills kids practice

  • Hold a crayon or pencil and control it with more care over time
  • Choose colors and talk about why
  • Explore and play with art materials (VA:Cr1.1.Ka)
  • Build skills with different materials by trying them (VA:Cr2.1.Ka)
  • Finish a picture and feel proud of it

Tips for teachers and parents

  • Offer chunky crayons or short pencils that are easy for small hands to grip.
  • Let your child pick the colors, even if the sky ends up purple. There is no wrong answer.
  • Display the finished page on the fridge. Seeing their work valued is part of the fun.

Questions about art & coloring worksheets

Does coloring help kindergartners?

It gives practice with pencil grip and hand control, which are used in writing, and it lets kids make choices and focus for a few minutes. It works best alongside other play and learning.

Does my child have to stay inside the lines?

No. Staying inside the lines develops gradually, and young children often scribble outside them. Encourage care, but let the picture be theirs.

Standards covered
