Grammar, spelling and vocabulary in third grade

Third grade grammar looks closely at how words work in a sentence. Kids explain the job of nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs, form regular and irregular plural nouns, and use the simple past, present and future tenses. They also learn to use possessives and to write complete sentences that join ideas.

Vocabulary work focuses on figuring out new words. Kids use context, prefixes and suffixes to work out meaning, and they begin to tell literal language from non-literal phrases.

Skills kids practice

  • Explain the jobs of nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs (L.3.1a)
  • Form regular and irregular plural nouns (L.3.1b)
  • Use the simple past, present and future tenses (L.3.1e)
  • Form and use possessives, such as the dog's bone (L.3.2d)
  • Use context and word parts to find the meaning of new words (L.3.4a, L.3.4b)
  • Tell literal from non-literal meaning (L.3.5a)

Tips for teachers and parents

  • Ask kids to identify the verb first in any sentence. It makes the rest of the sentence easier.
  • When they meet a new word, ask what clues are nearby before reaching for a dictionary.
  • Keep a list of irregular plurals, such as children, mice and teeth, and add to it.

Questions about grammar & vocabulary worksheets

What is the difference between an adjective and an adverb?

An adjective describes a noun, as in a loud noise. An adverb usually describes a verb, as in sang loudly, and many adverbs end in -ly.

What is a non-literal phrase?

A phrase that does not mean what the words say on their own. "A piece of cake" can mean something very easy, not a dessert.

Standards covered

  • L.3.4a Use sentence-level context as a clue to the meaning of a word or phrase.
