Measurement, time and data in first grade

First graders tell and write time to the hour and the half hour on analog and digital clocks. The tricky part is the hour hand: at half past 3 it sits halfway between the 3 and the 4, not on the 3. Our clocks are drawn exactly that way, so kids learn to read real clocks.

They also compare and order objects by length, measure with same-size units like paper clips, and sort information into simple charts with up to three groups.

Skills kids practice

  • Tell and write time to the hour and half hour (1.MD.B.3)
  • Read analog and digital clocks and match them
  • Order three objects by length (1.MD.A.1)
  • Measure length with non-standard units (1.MD.A.2)
  • Read and make simple tally charts and picture graphs (1.MD.C.4)

Tips for teachers and parents

  • Point out the time during the day: "It is 10 o'clock — the short hand is on the 10."
  • Teach the hour hand first. Once kids can find the hour, the minute hand at 12 or 6 is easy.
  • A paper plate clock with a short and a long hand makes "draw the hands" pages easier to check.

Questions about measurement, time & money worksheets

What time skills are taught in first grade?

Telling and writing time to the hour and half hour on analog and digital clocks. Quarter hours and five-minute intervals come in second grade.

Why do kids read 4:30 as 5:30?

At half past 4 the hour hand is between the 4 and the 5, and some kids pick the closer or bigger number. Remind them the hour is the number the short hand has just passed.

Standards covered

  • 1.MD.A.1 Order three objects by length; compare the lengths of two objects indirectly by using a third object.
  • 1.MD.A.2 Express the length of an object as a whole number of length units, by laying multiple copies of a shorter object (the length unit) end to end; understand that the length measurement of an object is the number of same-size length units that span it with no gaps or overlaps.
  • 1.MD.B.3 Tell and write time in hours and half-hours using analog and digital clocks.
  • 1.MD.C.4 Organize, represent, and interpret data with up to three categories; ask and answer questions about the total number of data points, how many in each category, and how many more or less are in one category than in another.
