Letters, sounds and first words in kindergarten
Foundational reading skills are the building blocks that make real reading possible. Kindergartners learn to name letters, hear syllables and rhymes, match each consonant to its sound, and tell the five vowels apart in both their short and long sounds. They also begin to read a handful of high-frequency words by sight.
Sound practice comes first, then print. A child who can hear the /k/ at the start of cat is ready to connect it to the letter c, and then to read and spell short words like cat, sun and pig.
Skills kids practice
- Name upper- and lowercase letters (RF.K.1d)
- Recognize and produce rhymes (RF.K.2a)
- Say the first, middle and last sounds in a simple three-sound word (RF.K.2d)
- Match each consonant to its most common sound (RF.K.3a)
- Tell short and long vowel sounds for the five vowels (RF.K.3b)
- Read common words by sight, such as the, my and is (RF.K.3c)
Tips for teachers and parents
- Start with a few letters, not all 26. Add new ones as the old ones stick.
- Play sound games in the car: "What sound does bus start with?"
- Hold sight words to a small set and review them often, a few at a time.
Questions about phonics & sight words worksheets
What is a CVC word?
A consonant-vowel-consonant word, like cat, sun or pig. These short words are usually the first ones kids sound out.
Should kids learn letter names or letter sounds first?
Both help. Most teachers teach them together, since a letter name often gives a clue to its sound.
Standards covered
