Place value and adding within 1000 in second grade

In second grade, kids discover that a three-digit number is made of hundreds, tens and ones: 427 is 4 hundreds, 2 tens and 7 ones. They read and write these numbers in standard form, in words and in expanded form (400 + 20 + 7), and compare them with the symbols >, = and <.

They use that place value understanding to add and subtract within 100 and to mentally add or subtract 10 or 100. They also skip count by 5s, 10s and 100s.

Skills kids practice

  • Understand hundreds, tens and ones in a three-digit number (2.NBT.A.1)
  • Skip count by 5s, 10s and 100s within 1,000 (2.NBT.A.2)
  • Read and write numbers to 1,000 in standard form, words and expanded form (2.NBT.A.3)
  • Compare two three-digit numbers with >, = and < (2.NBT.A.4)
  • Add and subtract within 100 using place value strategies (2.NBT.B.5)
  • Add or subtract 10 or 100 in your head (2.NBT.B.8)

Tips for teachers and parents

  • Bundle craft sticks in tens and tens of tens so kids can see what 100 and 1,000 look like.
  • Compare numbers by looking at the hundreds first, then the tens, then the ones.
  • Encourage skip counting aloud in the car, by 5s, 10s and 100s.
